Austalia's Largest Rooftop Solar Panel Installation.

Australia’s Largest Rooftop Solar Panel Installation Unveiled at Johnson & Johnson Medical
By Jace Shoemaker-... on August 23, 2010

Sanyo and Apollo Energy recently unveiled what is being touted as the largest commercially-funded rooftop solar panel installation in Australia. The 200-kilowatt solar system was recently installed on the rooftop of the Johnson & Johnson Medical headquarters in Sydney, Australia.
Government and company officials were on hand during the August 19th unveiling. The solar project incorporated Sanyo’s patented HIT technology – hybrid solar cells made of “thin mono crystal silicon surrounded by an ultra-thin amorphous silicon layer.”

The installation took part in two stages. The first stage, operational in June, comprised of 100 kW and the second stage of the installation, operational last week, comprised of the additional 100kW. The 952 solar panel installation will save the Johnson & Johnson Medical approximately 10 percent on electricity costs. The solar installation will produce enough energy to power 50 homes annually.

The project is part of Johnson & Johnson’s sustainability program, Project Leaf: linking environment and future. The company will replace one of its older chillers and will also install sensor-driven efficient lighting. All in all, the projects are expected to reduce the company’s energy usage by 20 percent annually.

The company will plant 37 trees to offset the environmental cost of the solar installation. Johnson & Johnson Medical is also expected to implement other sustainable initiatives including water conservation and waste management over the coming years as well.
Energy Matters, a division of Apollo Energy, is also extending a “special deal” to Johnson & Johnson employees as part of the solar project. Employees are encouraged to invest in a solar system that will not only save them more than $1,500 in energy bills each year, but will help the environment as well.

California starts to lay energy storage foundations

New bill edges US state towards creation of renewables-ready grid

California this week moved a step closer to mandating the rollout of energy storage systems capable of supporting new renewable energy projects, passing a critical bill in the state senate.

Bill AB2514 would require the Public Utilities Commission to set targets for systems that store energy. Both public and private utilities in the state would then be required to help meet the targets, the legislation said.

"This bill requires load-serving entities to meet any targets adopted by the commission by 2015 and 2020," it stated. "This bill requires publicly owned utilities to set their own targets for the procurement of energy storage and then meet those targets by 2016 and 2021."

Energy storage systems are widely regarded as crucial for the efficient operation of power grids that are reliant on a high proportion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Experts claim that large-scale energy storage systems would allow grid operators to cope with fluctuations in renewable energy output, ensuring they can always meet base load requirements.

Energy storage also enables utilities to sell stored renewable energy during peak times when energy prices are higher, helping to make renewable projects more economically viable.

The bill was voted through the California senate this week, but it is still not law. It now returns to the state assembly for concurrence in senate amendments, which will assess amendments made to the legislation during its senate hearing. If it succeeds there, it will go before governor Schwarzenegger. The deadline for the governor to sign the bill into law is September 30.

The passage of the bill would provide a major boost to emerging energy storage firms working on various grid-scale energy storage systems.

Most notably, battery specialist A123Systems recently launched a new spin off firm, named 24M, that is working on the development of large-scale flow batteries, while Beacon Power is currently working on the first large-scale flywheel energy storage facility in Stephentown, New York.

In related news, California's plans to increase it solar capacity have also moved forward after the state energy commission's siting committee last week recommended approval for a proposed 250MW solar thermal power plant.

The project, which is being developed by NextEra Energy at a site in the county of Riverside, is the latest in a series of large-scale solar plants backed by the committee.

In total, the committee has recommended approval for over 2,100MW of solar capacity in the past month, including the 250MW Abengoa Mojave facility, 250MW Beacon site, 1,000MW Blythe project and 370MW Ivanpah development.

As with the other projects the committee's recommendation does not represent a final decision on the planning application as the ruling will now be subject to consultation. However, if the recommendation is upheld NextEra could begin work at the site before the end of the year.

Vanguard Energy Completes Solar Installation at Fairton Prison

Vanguard Energy Completes Solar Installation at Fairton Prison

The federal government is increasingly turning to solar panels to power its facilities, from military bases to correctional institutions. Vanguard Energy Partners announced Monday the completion of a 402-kilowatt solar installation at a Fairton, New Jersey federal prison. Vanguard worked with Constellation Energy to design and build the project, which comprises over 1,800 Unicor solar modules built by inmates from an Otisville, New York federal prison. The ground-mounted array will save the facility over $80,000 in power bills in its first year and will prevent the emission of 790,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually."Turning to solar energy to help power our facility was a win-win," said prison warden Paul Schultz. "Now we will be able to combine significant cost savings with a reduction on our reliance of fossil fuels. Additionally, we were able to provide our inmates with the opportunity to work on the project and gain skills training in the green industry."The New Jersey solar installation will provide around one-quarter of the facility's power needs and makes FCI the first prison in the northeast to run partially off of solar power.

Concentrated solar to get big Colorado spread

Colorado could soon be home to the largest concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar farms in the world .
A 30-megawatt solar plant in the works would cover approximately 225 acres of the San Luis Valley in Colorado on land adjacent to transmission facilities owned by the electricity utility, Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo).

PSCo is a subsidiary of the electricity and natural gas giant Xcel Energy, which has signed a contract to have Congentrix, a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldman Sachs Group, to design and build the concentrated solar plant.
Congentrix has garnered all the necessary permits for the project, which is estimated to provide enough electricity to power 6,500 homes annually once completed, but said it has not yet finalized financing.
Assuming Congentrix secures financing shortly, the project will break ground in the first quarter of 2011 and be providing electricity to area residents by 2012, the company said in a statement.
CPV manufacturer Amonix, which will be providing the solar panels for the project, is also connected to the Goldman Sachs Group. It received $25 million in Series A funding from the investment giant, as well as $129 million in Series B funding from other investors including Kleiner Perkins.
CPV solar systems, unlike regular solar panel systems, use lenses or mirrors to maximize the amount of electricity that can be generated from sunlight. Amonix is known for using Fresnel lenses.
In conjunction with the deal's announcement, Xcel Energy has also affirmed that it has a preference for solar over wind when it comes to its renewable energy portfolio.
"Photovoltaic and solar generation have a better match to our peak load than does other intermittent renewables like wind," Tom Imbler, Xcel Energy vice president of commercial operations, said in a statement.
